I say this as the highest praise: this is the appeal of the Blue Ant Trilogy. Techno-thrillers with sociological and near-future (now present, in several cases!) tech... about things like finding the source of anonymous internet uploads, or the source of a particular fabric and brand.
BEHOLD the #OneHourCityConspiracy, brought to light by the #ThreeTenorsOfUrbanism including Hub pal & #UrbanPlanner extraordinaire, Canadian @brenttoderian.bsky.social. Time to push back on the folks sticking you in traffic all day & burning the world down! #yyc #Sprawl #Urbanism #CityBuilding
This is a good article on space based solar. One thing I haven't seen anyone mention yet is the challenge of keeping a beam focused. Keeping concentrated solar rays focused on the right place has proved difficult even on the ground, which is why CPV doesn't work out and Ivanpah struggles.

'Playing a broken record' via @nsidc.bsky.social at nsidc.org/snow-today/m... "In large parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Oregon, snow cover duration was 80 to 100 days below average. Snow cover duration in all other western US states was also far below average."

This is great reporting by @miriamwasser.bsky.social, but it's sort of weird for Massachusetts to ask gas utilities how to wind down gas utilities. The answers are bound to be laughably bad. But I suppose now the utilities can't say the state didn't include them in planning processes.

These 'casts' are the soot-filled mucus & bronchial lining from a patient in Beijing. 😨 Key points: - Only a few hours of exposure - No thermal burns evident - removed via cryoprobe - The man made ~full recovery at 2 weeks - A warming world will have a lot more of THIS in it.
This is a really sad story, and also now reading the details of it I'm surprised there hasn't been any discussion of how the waiting room delay at the ER could have contributed (like if he had been seen instead of leaving) calgaryherald.com/news/crime/a...
So many problems w Holly Jean Buck's latest apologia for the investments of fossil capital under the name of "democratic governance" of technology, but a very big one is: she doesn't understand systems networking, so her counterfactual hypotheticals are basically wrong. 1/3
A hilarious new low on the academic job market: Immediately after receiving my job application, this university used it to sell my email address to their credit union. They've since rejected me, but the credit union's marketing team sure hasn't! (Nor, of course, does their unsubscribe link work)
