what with the Catherine Connolly deepfake and the AWS outage this week, i'm starting to think that insisting educators use commercial amoral generative technology, from cradle to grave, might have been a mistake

It’s hard to understand what this all means for AMZN until Jassy is back on the stand next week during the earnings call. He must be prepared to have better answers to what will likely be the same questions (now infamous questions) from last quarter and also show / guide to 20%+ AWS growth

As expected and likely in connection with the $10bn "customer 4" of AVGO's XPU business -

The AWS outage puts the lie to capitalism yet again. Capitalism is promoted as merit based competition. The reality is a monopoly consolidation. Computing is consolidating to "the big three". Like oil, cars, telecom, etc. The Internet is no longer a network of interconnecting nodes.

"While other cloud providers exist, they lack the scale and reach of Amazon, Microsoft & Google. These three power the majority of the world’s cloud services, around 60% of the market.... But among those three, AWS is the largest with roughly 37% of the market, according to research firm Gartner."

Amazon’s global outage exposes major vulnerabilities to American life | CNN Business

It took a day without Amazon Web Services for Americans to realize how reliant the internet is on a single company.

2 very funny things about this article: The writer actually uses and likes ChatGPT, so they are not just a hater, and it’s sponsored by this giant popup for business AI content from Guardian Labs and AWS. I got a few sentences in before ā€œThe ROI of AIā€ was plastered over the screen.

Is it good when your product is reviewed by everyone but they all say it sucks.

Apparently the $3500 Eight Sleep bed woke customers up last night because they were dependent on AWS staying up? I don’t know how ā€œthe bed needs to work at least as good as a non-connected bed when things go downā€ wasn’t tattooed on every engineer’s chest like they were at Blackwater but for beds
The AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night, disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want to provide and I want to apologize for it.

We are taking two main actions:
1) We are restoring all the features as AWS comes back. All devices are currently working, with some experiencing data processing delays.
2) We are currently outage-proofing your Pod experience and we will be working tonight-24/7 until that is done.

More updates soon.

This! This is why I am generally skeptical about "smart" anythings: www.404media.co/the-aws-o… tl;dr -- yesterday's AWS outage caused many peoples' extremely expensive "smartbeds" to go haywire. Yes, it's lovely to be able to control things from […]

Reading how peopleā€˜s $2K+ ā€œsmart bedsā€ got screwed up by the AWS outage and thinking about how the only smart home objects in my home are a few Hue lightbulbs I bought over thirteen years ago. They’re still going strong, work perfectly, and have been complete offline for years.

Amazon’s problems originated at a US site that is its ā€œoldest and largest for web servicesā€ and often ā€œthe default region for many AWS services,ā€ Reuters noted.
